"You need to know that will become your customers prior to establishing a membership company," says Matt Hardigree who is the editor of The Autopian. "I am aware of issues in where people believed that there is a market which exists. Although math can be difficult it's not impossible. You can make the most of the information you've collected."
He says that if you're writing on an online platform, take note of the number of people you've got. "If you're a writer on a website along with 10 other writers and three of us are looking to begin something, how much is our readership? Is it fifteen percent of website's users? It's not a lot. Do we constitute greater than 80percent of all websites' customers?"
At some point, The Autopian founders David Tracy and Jason Torchinsky made up 50 percent of all traffic to Jalopnik. "They may have believed "We are able to start something and we can do this'," Matt says. Matt. "What's interesting is that David and Jason aren't awash with huge amounts of followers on their respective social media, which seems like the obvious way to translate into the number of readers. David and Jason didn't require have that, since they already have readers.
In the lead up to its launch, The Autopian did a study of the competition landscape in the automobile industry and the media. "We know the amount of automobile enthusiasts who visit these websites. Consider this: when you have taken out the cost What do we require in order to be successful? And then you have to think about where those people coming from? What percentage of them are aware of our identities and who we are? How much of them will be required for achieving the standard which is acceptable? Concerning membership fees What is the total have to pay? ? '."
He said: "You can make some prediction - but you aren't obliged to make it right, however you need to have information points. When you've made your predictions, you'll be able to use the ability to connect these data points to find your current location and then make changes. If there's no data available or you're assuming you're making a guess, calculate the numbers and then look for.
Matt acknowledges that once you've completed your research, it's time to get the "hold the breath" moment "In the first one hour or two hours following the beginning of my account, I felt like an complete chaos! I wondered, "What's going to happen? As memberships started to come in, I felt incredibly! The team is still conducting analyses of data and is continuously analyzing what's working well and what is not."
Strategies to increase engagement and grow
"I think we're around 10% of the way towards where our members would be,"" Matt continues. "We've met our targets and have had a lot of members, but those initial 10 percent are the easy to find. The last 10 percent of members will be the toughest. Every phase will be more difficult than the previous one, it's going to have to be a challenge to come up with a new idea."
Matt believes that 10x growth is likely to be achievable over the next five years. "If we manage to reach 50% of this target and we're almost completely viable at the current degree of membership. If we manage to attain 100%, we'll be more able to sustain ourselves through costs for membership, or revenue from membership. I'd love to be able to reach that goal."
Matt Hardigree, The Autopian
What is their strategy to get there? What is their current offering in terms of benefits for membership? How do they make use of this in order to draw new members?
Matt responds: "It's a balance because The Autopian is a journalism enterprise and is a place for fans. It is seen as three distinct areas by the ways we encourage members to join and keep them on the list by giving The Autopian feel valuable."
Strategy 1: Content
Matt states that the primary bucket is the content. "We have to write content that is engaging enough as well as unique enough to be different in comparison to the content that you see everywhere else I can only access this content through the Autopian. I am required to be a part of the official ranks at The Autopian if I want to have the Autopian in order to enjoy this.'
"You're not paying for access to this material because it's not paid-for. It's because you'd like to access it wherever you are around the globe." Matt affirms that the Autopian remains the Autopian's best-selling proposition "You require this to be in this world so desperately it's worth four dollars a month, and 10 dollars a month and $85 for a certain number of individuals."
Strategies 2 and The Rewards
The bucket 2 can be a good example of items which members can get for free expense, including Discord access, clothing such as T-shirts and entry to various events, like trivia nights, with other things such as stickers or badges.
"We offer a wide range of merchandise to pick from, which is similar as purchasing the car. First one is a cloth ($70/year) prior to moving on to vinyl ($100/year) followed by Velour which costs $250 annually. The final option is a luxurious Corinthian leather, costing $1,000 each year. There is a greater tendency to see people using Velour and leather than I would think!"
"One among the presents you receive is a birthday drawing. One of our co-founders is a talent as an artist. We hadn't anticipated to get lots of drawings. Hence, the drawings of his birthday celebrations have been more extensive than we expected he would - And we're just beginning to complete them!"
The monthly cost of $1000 appears to be something to be a huge amount. However, this was the suggestion of Defector, a well-established company in the field of media Defector. They told Matt they had several clients who had $1000 or more on their accounts that was not expected. "I considered to myself"I don't even know how you're talking about, but what is it did you know?' They said"Do it!"" Matt laughed.
"They were also saying they would prefer to have the middle-tier option since they have currently two lower levels in combination with a higher level," He continues. "We discussed it, but we ended up making the decision to use $250 annually. This was the perfect amount because we have so many Velour members. In this year's edition, there was a greater number of people moving between vinyl and Velour as well as going from vinyl to Velour. More than 100 individuals moved from 250 than did those moving between 250 and 100. I believe we've got it correct!"
Autopian's Autopian team also observed that behind-the-scenes material has gained a lot of interest. The team also shares procedural content like how the team came up with the headline and "Tales of Slack". Matt states: "We have our internal Slack. It is not intended for public consumption. Slack isn't intended for consumption by anyone else."
"People are always coming up with weird absurd and funny things!" Matt smiles. "Our Chief Editor David isn't a pop-culture awareness and is always confused by the minutiae of everything. He was thinking Ronan was Serpico. He believed that to believe that the Al Pacino film set in the 1970s was a Robert De Niro film of the 1990s!"
Strategy 3. Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)
"The third type of content that is successful and that many viewers overlook, is FOMO. The authors don't want viewers not to get the most important facts wrong," Matt continues.
"We belong to an official Discord that has daily columns of tips and advice. The Discord we use is accessible and cost-free, however, there's a member section," he adds. "I would like to see members share photos on general chats: "Here's my photograph with my shirt. Here's me sporting my badge'. Members would like to be involved to participate in the contest."
Matt states that getting members to join is an excellent idea if it is compatible with the kinds of content that you post. "Every once in a while, we'll launch a 'Here's all you'll get' message that will help people remember the benefits that membership offers."
More regularly they will acknowledge their communities "We appreciate our community members who post comments. We thank your contributions to making our community better. If you're unable to join our community and we're understanding. We understand that not everyone is able to afford. If you're a student, whatever it is, we understand. If you're unable manage the cost it's okay to become a mere user. We'd love to welcome you; we'd like you to be a part of our family. If you're an enthusiastic fan of this kind of stuff, you're in an opportunity to be member of the community."
We'll then do an FOMO blog entry in which Jason will say 'Here's all the birthday-themed designs I made in the month of July!' People who see the designs will be thinking "Oh God! I'd love to be that.'
Communities for building can be found in many forms and sizes, including birthday cards to car lovers.
