Space and movement in illustrations The CreativeMindClass Blog

Mar 16, 2022

Ever since I was a kid I've loved to draw, paint and use my hands. It has been my most natural method for me to express my feelings. But growing as a child in Taiwan the pursuit of the art of making was often considered a snub, and I was often told by adults to study the more practical aspects of art in order to avoid ending up starving on the streets.

My mom was always encouraging me to do whatever I desired and has done everything she could to assist me reach my dreams. Following my return in the United States and graduating high school, I realized that I would like to go after art as a career.

I was admitted to ArtCenter College of design, where I studied Illustration, with the goal of moving into feature animation. Along the way, I was introduced to motion graphics, and was enthralled by its versatility , as well as it's amazing art work done by those I admire.

What would you say about your personal style?

I am still on the road to discovering a style I am able to confidently identify as my personal. I have the tendency to be drawn to trying various new styles every now and then... A month I'll want to do something very vibrant, and then I'll be tempted to explore more naturalistic colors; I'll be really into a shape driving style for a while but then one day I'll become bored and will want to explore something that's more based on lines.

In other instances, I'll blend two different things that are intriguing to me, as if I'm on the endless journey of discovery and discover. But after dabbling a little in a few places, I'm noticing that there are certain patterns, shapes, and colors I'm drawn to, perhaps it's the beginning of an aesthetic?

That's a big reasons I enjoy working at Oddfellows, sometimes I still cannot believe that I'm fortunate to be part of a team of insanely talented people. In the workplace, we are often required the ability to change our style from project to project, nearly every task is completed using different methods, and I'm constantly learning new things from my colleagues every day.

What's the secret to making your illustrations?

I like to make drawings of subjects I am intrigued or curious in. I then attempt to make my own interpretation of the subject.

However, my main goal is to have enjoyable. I think having fun is key to making anything, viewers can really tell that a creator was having fun doing some thing... the extra sparkle.

In the midst of the pandemic, watching my colleagues and our studio trying their best to give back to the local community In the end, I decided to launch a Patreon dubbed Joy&Frens, where half of my net revenue goes to charity that my patrons choose. On it, I share Tips & Tricks, process videos, and invite my friends to collaborations and share their wisdom.

My work is also displayed on Instagram and on my website.
