New: US judge warns Google that major changes will be Imposed for Illegal Play Store Monopoly -

Aug 24, 2024

U.S. District Judge James Donato has advised Google that big changes are likely to be made to its Android app store after a jury determined the Play Store operates as a monopoly that is illegal.

The Associated Press reports that Judge Donato has suggested that he might require Google to allow alternative stores for apps on Android devices, a move that aims to reduce Google's power over app distribution and billing on its platform. This monopoly with "nearly all-control" generates billions annually for Google, but the court's decision could disrupt this process, as Google anticipating costs of up to 600 million dollars.

Google is concerned about the possibility of opening up its Play Store to third-party app stores may expose customers to security threats, leading to what Google calls "security disorder." Despite these concerns the judge Donato stressed the need for a significant change, saying, "We are going to take down the barriers and it's going to happen."

This is part of a broader antitrust push against Google as well as a major instance involving its Google search engine due to be launched in September. Judges are hoping to give an order outlining the necessary changes needed for Google's Play Store soon, possibly prior to Labor Day.

An article from The Verge on the same subject provides a list of Epic Games benefiting from these results as well, with an introduction to the article that reads "Judge James Donato will issue his final ruling on the terms Google offers -- and Epic receives within a matter of weeks."
