Ever since she was a little kid, New Zealand-based maximalist designer and artist Evie Kemp enjoyed designs and art. "I was always drawing, redesigning my dollhouse, or watching room makeovers on TV." In her teens, Evie says, "I was very frightened of being  different, and would do almost anything to avoid standing out."

That urge to fit in was what led her to law school. But during her time in law school, "my mental health became worse," Evie says, "and I had to take 6 months off. As I recovered I focused my attention on figuring out what I really did love, and decided to apply to study graphic design rather than." Reconnecting with her first love of art changed her life. "It was at this point when I began to discover my own voice--and embrace the many quirks I'd held down for a long time."

Since the moment she made that choice to concentrate on improving her skills for an area she is passionate about, her determination and expressive voice has helped her build her own business. "I find increasingly that I'm more bold and artistic and colorful than ever," she says. "It's similar to the old "Which one came first, the chicken or the egg?' thing It's hard to tell whether I become more comfortable and confident with myself as my work is more exuberant or reversed. I'd never say my style is "developed," but I'm sure it's evolving."
