The year was in its inaugural Australian Make It Awards to benefit the work of Australian entrepreneurs, innovators and small-scale businesses. The Make It Awards come from 's roots: In 2003 its the chief executive Anthony Casalena founded the company by obtaining a loan of $30,000 that was used to purchase the first servers.

The Make It Awards, we're aiding Australia's Australian business community by supplying three new businesses by providing an award of $30,000 to help them achieve their mission. The winners were picked from over 250 applications, and were selected based on their strategy for business, innovativeness, benefit to their community and brand and fashion. Meet Reef Design Lab, Lousy Ink, and The Difference Three mission-driven companies that are committed to sustainable development and involvement in the community.

Reef Design Lab

Reef Design Lab is a multidisciplinary design and development company which designs marine habitats. Their designs help research how to restore and preserve the natural diversity of marine and coastal habitats. Reef Design Lab works with government officials, builders, architects, and research institutions, as well as marine scientists across a variety of areas such as ecological engineering, coastal protection, infrastructure for marine use, as well as coral farming.

Reef Design Lab plans to apply its grant funding to improve the technology in its own lab and speed up creation of new products.

The business was started in the year 2000 by two artists. Lousy Ink recycles printer cartridge ink to create a variety of art tools that are environmentally friendly including recycled pens and ink. The company works in conjunction with Australian collaboration partners to purchase the materials, reuse their materials or recycle older cartridges that were used in the inkjet. Lousy Ink's aim is to convert scrap into a resource for creativity, as well as support both the environment and artistic community through encouraging more environmentally-friendly methods of creativity.

Lousy Ink plans to use its grant to design various color inks that include magenta, cyan and yellow and black.

The distinction

The Difference was the first app for mobile devices available in Australia that allows users to earn an extra amount of money by making transactions, and donate it away to causes that they're passionate about. The Difference makes use of technology that allows any person to contribute to sustainable global change through simple every day actions as well as microdonations.

The Difference plans to use its grant to expand the range of services it offers in technical fields and help the organization's Make Change campaign.
