Latest News: Apple Revises App Store Link-Out Regulations per EU DMA, but New Fees Still High -

Apple changed its App Store's rules to make it more in line with the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) However, the fees associated with Apple's revisions are still quite high according to an article in The Verge.

The major changes are described by six bullets in Apple's News and Updates page, with readers invited to click through to the more in-depth guide to the changes in the developer's documentation.

Some highlights are advertising "offers for purchases available at a destination of their choice," developers being able to "use an actionable link that can be clicked, tapped or scan, in order to take users to where they want to go," and that "Updated the business terms used by apps that utilize the External Purchase Link Entitlement will be made available to coincide with changes in these features."

These changes are supposed to begin to take effect "this the fall" (no more specific start date appears to have been set).

 "Nearly Endless 20 Percent Fee For Developers'

Per the article from The Verge, "Apple has added a 20 percent fee for developers with the latest EU update" the updates appear to allow developers greater flexibility regarding linking to purchase alternatives outside of App Store. App Store.

However, the fees associated with the feature's new features are so prohibitive and expensive that "it's difficult to imagine that any developers would use it."

That's because, for developer who choose to join the StoreKit External Purchase Link Entitlement (EU) Addendum, the costs associated include a five percent initial acquisition fee plus an additional 20% store services fee that applies to "sales of digital products and services via any platform and that occur within a fixed 12-month period from the date of an installation, which includes app updates and the reinstallation of apps."

The Verge informs us that the app's updates or reinstalls through the user resets the clock back to 12 months left for the ongoing store services fee. Various other programs and mechanisms could lower fees and include support for third-party app stores, charging for qualifying auto-renew subscriptions, and being a developer in Apple's small business program. The ongoing charges of twelve months reset at reinstalls or updates is what makes them potentially "endless."

A recently published TechCrunch article, "Apple revises DMA compliance for link-outs from the App Store, with fewer restrictions, and a new fee structure," further clarifies some of the distinctions between the various terms of Apple and their associated fees, both existing and brand new. For example it states that"Store Service Fee," for example "Store Services Fee" will comprise "a 10% commission or 5 discount commission (e.g. Developers that are part of the App Store's small business program) according to Apple's brand new commercial terms, or 20% standard, and the 7% discount offered under Apple's existing terms."
