Installation and painting - The CreativeMindClass Blog

Nicole Mueller is a San Francisco-based visual artist. Her works include large-scale painting installation, murals, and murals which mimic the effect that stained glass can produce. Driven by process the abstract pieces are vibrant and saturated. They are constructed with layers of collage-like shapes. Her art explores the variety of colors, states in flux, dichotomies inside painting, the fundamental transition of the human condition, and the threshold between outside and inside, both tangible and intangible.

About my background

I'm primarily a painter who is a full-time artist in San Francisco, California.

My professional experience includes painting murals, installation work, as well as doing the field of arts administration and professional development.

I took art classes in The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore in Maryland, where I resided for a number of years before moving out towards on the West coast.

A significant portion of my work and mission involves co-hosting Beyond the Studio with my fellow artist Amanda Adams, a podcast which aims to improve visibility in the world of art through interviews with other contemporary artists on their careers pathways.

My personal style

Most of what I do is intuitive and driven by processes. It is abstract, extremely saturated, built with color and layers of collage-like patterns.

I make large-scale paintings with light-activated glass installations that mimic the effects of stained glass, and murals. Within this work I'm exploring dichotomies and changes in state, the boundary between interior and exterior, the tangible and intangible.

About the key to making my art

I believe that being consistent in your attendance at your work is key--for me making a habit of studio work and setting myself goals to keep moving forward has made it easier for me to prioritize my work when life gets in my way. It also helps in knowing when to step back to rest or even take breaks (for a day or a month, or even longer).
