Abstract and striking geometric drawings: imaginary drawings deeply rooted in graffiti art by Marc David Spengler

A fundamental part of the creation process of geometric designs is anticipating of unforeseen results. Marc insists that each shape and colour selection can be seen as an impulse reaction to those shapes and colours that he has previously sketched. Optical illusions, false shadows transitions from flatness into the sense of space, and seemingly small aspects - when exhibited in the Ampersand Gallery in Portland in the year 2000, they amazed the viewers.

"My name is Marc David Spengler, I'm 25 years old, and I'm living in a suburb in Stuttgart, Germany. Since I was a little youngster, I've enjoyed drawing a lot. When I was in the fifth year, I wrote that one of my goals was to become a car artist. A little bit later at the age of 12 I was introduced to the art of graffiti which has been a huge inspiration source for me for the rest of my life.

The reason why artists employ geometric shapes?

I'm no longer an artist who is doing graffiti However, I'm watching geometric shapes every day through magazines, social media as well as books. After I graduated from school in 2014, I started learning in communication design in the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and am currently learning today as a student in the class taught by Patrick Thomas.

Apart from my studies In addition, I'm involved in exhibitions as well as brand collaborations and my sketchbooks. With regards to my illustration style I'm working mostly with abstract geometric shapes as well as bright color combinations which I try to balance in the frame I've created for myself. My goal for every composition I'm creating is to create harmony.

How do you create geometric art?

For creating geometric art I don't have an initial pencil sketch which is why a large portion of my drawings are imaginary. I like to start working from the outside, drawing a background silhouette, after which I think about what might be happening in the interior. Therefore, I'm always reacting to the shapes I've drawn previously, which makes it very intriguing for me as I also don't know how it will appear when it's finished.

I favor making simple geometric drawings because they give me a better overview of the overall composition. I also try not to overwhelm it by adding numerous elements. When I'm drawing, I also like to experiment with the provided parameterslike creating an unreal shadow or making an optical illusion, since everything is feasible in the two-dimensional world."
