Control over Community-related notifications to you as well as

Jul 6, 2022

We've changed the settings for community notifications to create a better member experience (and fewer emails). Here's what's new.

What's the right way to let members know what's happening within your local community?

It is important to inform your users know about interesting conversations , and get them involved in discussions more often -- but you also have to allow them control over their experience and avoid notification overload. In our conversations with our creators how important it is to strike the right balance.

In the most recent update to the community function that you and your users are more in control of messages. It means more active conversations, less flooded inboxes, and a community platform that can bring both of you to each other.

Set your own notifications settings as a creator member

Creators and community members have the option of choosing which notification they would like to receive on the same topic: Posts that are new, new responses to your comments, and/or new replies to your posts.

If you sign in to the community you are a part of then go to Settings and then click "Edit" under Notifications. (Creators are able to find this on the Notifications section of their Account's settings.)

You'll see all of the subjects that you're following in the community. Just check or uncheck the boxes to choose the types of alerts you'd like to receive for the specific area.

For example, you might prefer to be notified of postings, comments and replies on a topic that's time sensitive like Live Events and Announcements. In other areas it is possible to only get updates when someone makes an announcement - or turn off notifications for that topic entirely.

You may also toggle the notifications off and on through clicking "Mute ALL" and "Unmute the entire".

You can also modify your notification preferences per topic conveniently by accessing on the "All topics"page or on an specific topic page. Select the bell icon then set your notification preferences.

Look over this document for step-by step tutorial on how to change your settings for notification as well as feel free to share with your members, too!

Set default notifications for a topic

Creators are also able to set standard notification settings for each area of your community. This gives you greater control over the member experience.

Instead of sending notifications to your members for every article in each topic, you can choose which subjects your members are notified about and the types of notifications they receive.

Here's how:

In the Community section of your dashboard, click on "All topics". Next, select the "..." next to the topic you'd like to modify and then select "Edit topic". Then, select the settings for your notifications under "Default notification settings".

Users can alter these setting of notifications at any time in their user accounts. If members haven't changed their settings, then they'll default to the settings that were set by the author of every topic.

We're hoping these updates to the community will improve the experience for you and your members. Thanks for reading!
