We celebrate this day, and invite all of you to participate when we embark on an enlightening journey through the rich history of IWD as a testimony to the effectiveness of collective action.

Beginning with Seeds of Change to a global Movement

The seeds for IWD were sown during the first half of 20th century. It was a period when the fight for women's rights was gaining momentum. On March 8, 1857, women workers marched in protest of low working conditions and a lack of rights for women in their industries of textile. This strike called for a shorter work day as well as fair and reasonable living wage. A few years later, on the 8th of March an organized march by female working in the needle trades was organized in protest of child labor, conditions in sweatshops, as well as demand women's right to vote. In 1910, two years after the march the date was changed to March 8th, which is now recognized as International Women's Day.

The Catalyst to Change

Through the 20th century IWD served as a potent catalyst for changes. It became a platform that allowed women to speak their voices in the areas of the right to vote, fair work conditions and pay, and access to education. In 1975 IWD was recognized by IWD was recognized by the United Nations officially recognized IWD and affirmed its significance across the globe.

A Day of Celebration and Action

Presently, IWD is celebrated in countless ways, from awe-inspiring marches to intimate gatherings. This is a chance to celebrate trailblazing women in every field that range from artists and scientists to business owners and activists. But, IWD isn't just about celebrating, it's also a call to action. It is a reminder that the battle for gender equality remains far from being over. We must continue to advocate for equal opportunity, fight damaging stereotypes, and support women and girls all over the world. The theme for International Women's Day 2024 is " Invest in Women to accelerate progress" using the widely promoted hashtag, #InvestInWomen..

According to the UN the UN, these five areas are key to pushing ahead this hashtag until it becomes out of date:

  • Investing in women, one of the human rights issues:Time is running out. Equal gender representation is the biggest human rights problem, affecting everyone.
  • Ending poverty: Due to the COVID pandemic and conflicts over the last 75 million people are living in extreme in poverty as of 2020. Action is urgently needed for preventing more than 342 million women and children living in poverty by 2030.
  • Implementing gender-responsive financing: Conflicts and rising costs could cause 75% of the countries to decrease public spending in 2025. This could negatively affect women as well as their most essential services.
  • Shifting to a green economy and care society:The economy currently disproportionately impacts women. Advocates propose a shift to a green economy and care society in order to increase women's voices.
