8 Metrics Every Course Creator Needs to Follow --

Sep 1, 2022

The course creators are constantly looking for ways to improve their classes. One of the most effective ways to do this is to be attentive to your learners.

The issue is that a lot of the students you teach won't be able to let you know what's happening within your class. Some will leave the course, cancel their membership, or finish the course and disappear, which means you'll never get what happened to them.

Tracking online course metrics helps you determine what learners have to say about your class and the ways to make it better.

It's not just about counting the number of students who complete a course. There is no course that will achieve an exact completion in the event of a life-changing incident, or if a learner's motives change or the circumstances alter.

Let's look at the eight online course metrics you must be monitoring and ways you can use the data to increase your chances of success.

Progression and Performance of Learners

      Metric 1 The Course Progression

In a nutshell those who are able to complete your course at a good speed are probably engaged and invested. It could signal a strong courses that you could duplicate or show to other students.

If you are monitoring the course's progress Consider asking the following questions:

  • How long does it take an individual to finish a class?
  • What speed do they move through each topic and lesson?
  • Which concepts are easy to grasp to you, and what concepts seem difficult?
  • If they are consistently dragging, how can I help them understand?

Learning Satisfaction, Approval and Satisfaction of the Learner.

      Metric 2: Surveys at exit

The fact that a student has completed a course doesn't mean they enjoyed the experience. It is advisable to conduct surveys after the course has ended (and once learners know they won't be affecting the grade they receive.) A quick exit survey can capture initial impressions.

      Metric3: course evaluations

      4. Metric: Instructor effectiveness

Even the most experienced instructors can be hesitant when teaching online courses. Examine the way instructors respond to student requests, and also how they're communicating with students. This is especially important to observe if instructors alter but not the material for the class. Is there a difference in engagement?

      Metric 5, Discussions and comments

Discussion threads on the internet can be a fantastic way for students to study materials together, and to feel the sense of being part of a community. Examine group discussions to see what learners are discussing and engaging with the content. An amount of participation in the discussion board can prove to be valid!

Learning Competency and Proficiency

      Metric 6: Quiz Scores

Metric 7 The quality of assignment submissions

The quality and depth of the assignments can help you to get a sense for how learners are engaging with your course. If you can, provide learners their own feedback after each task (or review the feedback that an instructor leaves). This will help you determine the ways students can overcome obstacles. It can also lead to better rate of success (and scores!) for individual learners.

      Metric 8: Certificates vs Retakes

How long are learners engaged in the course and do they come back to take another course? Do they complete the course with a certification or need to go back to the exam? A high rate of completion is a simple number you can track without needing the students to submit an in-depth review.

Does your LMS Feature Customizable Metrics?

  • See a snapshot of enrollment and pending assignments after logging in.
  • Track student progress in real time and observe how students move throughout the course and keep tabs on their test scores
  • You can manage assignments by approving or deleting assignments
  • Create advanced reports, and export course data to an Excel file or CSV. CSV or Excel spreadsheet
